Thank you for your interest in adopting an equine from Horse Haven at Best Friends Animal Society. Our goal is to find safe, caring, lifelong homes for our adoptable animals. Your survey responses will help us match you with an equine who fits your current lifestyle and your plans for the future. We want you and your new equine partner to meet each other’s expectations so will ask a few questions about what you are looking for and then make recommendations on which of our horses might be a suitable match for you. We have a lot of pasture pals (horses that can no longer be ridden) and some rideable horses. The adoption fee for Horse Haven horses and mules is $500 per animal. The adoption fee for burros is $250 per animal. The adopter is responsible for animal transport costs to their new home. Best Friends may be able to transport your animal to you for a fee.
Although our goal is to find forever homes for our equines, we understand that unfortunate circumstances occur that may disrupt your best intentions. In the event that you find it impossible to keep your adopted equine(s), we require that you return to Best Friends Animal Society any animal you’ve adopted, at your expense, no matter how much time has passed since the initial adoption. Best Friends animals may never be sold or given to a third party.
Our training method of choice here at the sanctuary is Parelli Natural Horsemanship. This means adopters interested in our rideable horses should either already be Parelli students or committed to study and follow the program either on their own or (ideally) with a certified Parelli instructor before the adoption takes place. We find that Parelli Natural Horsemanship techniques are such a radically different experience for the horse that it would be unfair to ask them to go back to more traditional or normal methods of training. It is not that we consider other kinds of training bad or wrong, just that our horses have learned, understand and flourished under Parelli methods. We have tried to adopt our rideable horses into non-Parelli homes in the past and have had a 100% return rate. If you are already a student of other natural horsemanship techniques, we are also happy to have you demonstrate your skills on line, at liberty and under saddle to be considered a potential adoptive home.
Completion of this survey does not guarantee adoption of a Best Friends equine. This brief survey will help us assess if we have an equine that may be compatible with you and your expectations. After you have submitted this survey and communicated with our adoption coordinator, you may be invited to fill out an application which will ask more specific questions regarding your facilities, care, etc. Thank you for considering adopting a horse from Best Friends!
